Black Coffee rejects viral fake quote on xenophobia

Published

on

Internationally acclaimed DJ and producer Black Coffee publicly denied a viral social media image that falsely attributed a comment about xenophobia in South Africa to him. The artist, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, posted on X on June 6 to distance himself from the fabricated quote.

What was shared online

The circulating poster claimed he had said: “Being a SA abroad is now embarrassing as everyone thinks all of us are xenophobic nation.” The image included a photograph of the DJ alongside the South African flag and misspelt his name as “Black Koffe.”

Black Coffee’s response

Responding directly to the post on X, Black Coffee dismissed the image in a short reply:

“Fake news.”

That brief clarification was widely shared online and was noted as a direct rebuke of the fabricated attribution.

Online reaction

Several social media users praised the DJ for quickly addressing the false claim. User @collsmas wrote:

“Wise move, they can’t drag your name in every nonsense, I’m really happy you clarified this.”

Other responses included:

“No need to explain @RealBlackCoffee, we know you’re a true patriot.”

and

“Thanks for the clarification. Keep playing great music, sir!”

Broader context

The debunked post surfaced amid heightened public debate in South Africa about illegal immigration. Since 2025, the country has seen several anti-illegal immigration protests, and various civic and anti-illegal immigration groups have identified June 30 as a deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country, a date that has sparked widespread online speculation.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation about recent anti-migrant protests and the June 30 deadlines, warning against vigilantism and saying that only authorised government officials have the right to enforce immigration laws. He also promised a major crackdown on undocumented migration.

Why the clarification mattered

The swift rebuttal from Black Coffee removed a high-profile name from a contentious public debate and highlighted how quickly misinformation can spread when images and quotes are circulated on social platforms.
