Springs Girls’ High School will make waves internationally as Grade 11 learner Sibongakonke Gumede (17) gears up to represent her school and Springs in Germany. This remarkable opportunity comes through her selection for the Friends of South Africa (FSA) Youth Exchange Programme, an organisation based in Gauteng and the Western Cape that specialises in providing learners with the enriching experience of learning abroad.

Bobo, as the Dunnottar teenager is affectionately known, stumbled upon a flyer for the programme in one of her classes and decided to seize the opportunity. With the support of her teacher, Caitlin Steyn, and her loved ones, she completed all necessary assignments, achieving an impressive 11th place in the province for her results through FSA.

Excitement and gratitude fill Bobo as she anticipates the journey ahead. While nerves linger, especially regarding the solo aspects of her trip, such as train rides, her confidence and strong-willed nature shine through. Bobo’s mother, Frida Skosana, expresses both nervousness and happiness, eagerly anticipating the gifts her daughter’s international adventure will bring.

“I am going with an open mind and a teachable spirit,” says Bobo, reflecting her excitement and readiness for the upcoming experience. Her aspirations for the journey include learning about German cuisine, culture, languages, and history. Bobo is particularly eager to grasp the values and traditions cherished by the Germans, exploring the differences between their culture and her own.

The month-long stay in Schleswig-Holstein holds special significance for Bobo, who looks forward to meeting her host family. Caitlin Steyn conveys warm wishes for Bobo, emphasising the hope for a safe trip filled with smooth travels, delightful discoveries, and the joy of new experiences.

Bobo will embark on her journey to Germany on December 14, representing not only Springs Girls’ High School but also fostering cultural exchange and understanding.
