Toyota recalls 77 RAV4 plug-in hybrids in South Africa over safety concern
Toyota South Africa has issued a safety recall affecting 77 RAV4 plug-in hybrid vehicles after identifying a potential fault that could cause the vehicles to lose power while travelling at higher speeds.
The recall, announced by the National Consumer Commission (NCC), applies to vehicles manufactured between 2 April and 3 September 2026 and sold across the country.
Although the recall affects a relatively small number of vehicles, the potential consequences of the fault make it an important warning for affected motorists.
What is wrong with the affected RAV4 models?
According to the NCC, the problem involves a component known as the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU), which forms part of the vehicle’s plug-in hybrid system.
In certain vehicles, the component may fail to complete its initialisation process correctly. This can prevent the system from making the higher-speed motor control mode available when needed.
If this happens while driving, warning lights may appear on the dashboard. The vehicle could then switch into a restricted fail-safe driving mode or shut down completely.
A complete shutdown could result in a sudden loss of driving power at higher speeds, increasing the risk of an accident.
What should affected Toyota owners do?
Toyota owners who believe their vehicles may fall within the recall should contact an authorised Toyota dealership to establish whether their vehicle is affected.
The required corrective action involves reprogramming the MG-ECU, which will be carried out free of charge.
The NCC has urged motorists not to ignore product safety recalls, stressing the importance of contacting suppliers and ensuring that identified faults are properly addressed.
For Cape Town motorists who own a RAV4 plug-in hybrid, checking their vehicle’s recall status is a worthwhile precaution before their next journey.
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the National Consumer Commission directly at [email protected].
