Teachers return to classrooms as CCTV boycott at Durban school ends

Teachers at uMkhumbane Secondary School in Durban have returned to classrooms after a boycott over the installation of CCTV cameras that had disrupted teaching and learning and heightened tensions within the school community.

Standoff over CCTV and calls for suspension

The boycott involved educators demanding the suspension of the school principal amid allegations of inadequate consultation about the CCTV installation. The dispute drew in parents and governing structures as stakeholders worked to restore normal schooling.

Department intervenes to restore stability

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education said the situation “has now stabilised” following intervention and engagement with school management, organised labour representatives and the School Governing Body (SGB).

Official response

During a visit, Head of Department Nkosinathi Ngcobo emphasised the need to protect learning environments from prolonged conflict. He was quoted saying:

“The education of our children cannot be compromised. We are encouraged by the spirit of cooperation displayed by all parties in resolving the challenges that confronted the school.”

Ngcobo added that the outcome showed “that constructive engagement and social dialogue remain the most effective tools in addressing disputes while safeguarding the future of our learners.”

Return to school

In a department statement, officials said 22 educators and the school principal, Ntokozo Ngobese, have since returned to the institution after what was described as a collective effort to prioritise learners’ constitutional right to education.

The department commended the SGB, organised labour representatives, education stakeholders and the broader school community for demonstrating leadership, maturity and commitment in reaching what it called an amicable resolution that prioritises the constitutional right of every learner to quality education.

Outlook for learners

Officials said the return of staff was met with relief and renewed optimism as learners welcomed the resumption of lessons after a period of uncertainty and disruption.
