Calls for anger‑management lessons after fatal Letlhabile school stabbing

A 15-year-old pupil was fatally stabbed outside Ikatisong Secondary School in Zone 4, Letlhabile, on 25 August, prompting calls from experts and the community for anger‑management lessons, stronger school safety measures and improved psychosocial support.

What happened

Letlhabile police received a complaint from Letlhabile Clinic that a 15-year-old male pupil had been brought to the facility with stab wounds on 25 August. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased upon arrival, North West police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said.

Police are treating the incident as a murder investigation. Morake said:

“Police are investigating a case of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old in Zone 4, Letlhabile.”

Police say the arrested pupil was injured during the incident and is receiving medical attention. He is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court to face a murder charge.

Calls for early intervention and anger management

Experts and community members have urged schools to introduce lessons on managing anger and alternative ways of resolving conflict to prevent similar tragedies. The incident is reported to have involved two classmates who were friends, one aged 15 and the other allegedly 16.

Education expert Hendrick Makaneta said the lessons should start at the foundation phase and highlighted mental health support. He said:

“The lessons have to start at foundation phase. Pupils must be taught how to manage anger. But of importance is the issue of mental health. Some of the pupils cannot manage their emotions effectively. This needs to be addressed by support teams such as psychologists.”

Makaneta also called for advocacy groups and stakeholders to strengthen school safety and early intervention strategies, particularly around bullying, and for deployment of education psychologists and social workers to assist teachers.

Broader prevention measures urged

North-West University professor Kathija Yassim described the incident as tragic and said it raises questions about violence among young people and the wider systems that should protect them. She said:

“We need stronger collaboration between schools, families, communities, social services and law enforcement agencies, alongside better access to psychosocial support and conflict-resolution mechanisms for pupils.”

Yassim added that responses should go beyond searches, punishment and increased security, and include functioning mechanisms for conflict resolution, psychosocial support, early intervention and development of healthy ways of dealing with anger and disagreement.

Aftermath for the school community

The stabbing, which occurred outside the school gate of Ikatisong Secondary School, has left families and the school community dealing with the consequences of the death. Authorities continue to investigate while experts and community members press for preventative measures in schools.
