ANC’s Nomvula Mokonyane Accuses AfriForum of Spreading Misinformation on Land Expropriation

African National Congress (ANC) deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane has accused AfriForum of running a misinformation campaign that she believes influenced former US President Donald Trump’s threat to cut financial aid to South Africa. Mokonyane claims the organization misrepresented the Expropriation Act by linking it to land confiscation, fueling international criticism of the country’s policies.

AfriForum responded with a statement urging Trump to impose sanctions on specific ANC leaders rather than punishing the entire nation. The organization also called for amendments to the Expropriation Act to better safeguard property rights, warning that the current legislation could deter investors and worsen South Africa’s economic difficulties.

“AfriForum’s position has always been that the foolish government and president should be punished for their destructive policies rather than the country’s citizens,” said AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel.

Kriel had previously cautioned President Cyril Ramaphosa against signing the Expropriation Act, arguing that it could further weaken investor confidence and add to the financial strain faced by South Africans.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Mokonyane accused AfriForum of racial discrimination and self-interest, claiming that their actions reveal an unwillingness to support policies designed to create a more inclusive society.

“AfriForum has been at the forefront of spreading misinformation about South Africa’s progressive laws. Their actions show the need for the United States to engage diplomatically rather than rely on biased narratives,” Mokonyane stated.

She further criticized the group’s call for ANC leaders to be individually punished, describing it as racist and unpatriotic.

“That is very racist of them, very reactionary of them, very unpatriotic. Our progressive policies are aimed at uniting South Africans, promoting equality, and ensuring inclusivity,” she added.

Mokonyane also accused AfriForum of seeking financial gain by opposing the Expropriation Act, alleging that they stand to benefit if land reform efforts fail.

“They know that if South Africa loses international funding for crucial programs like HIV/AIDS treatment, the private sector will benefit while vulnerable communities suffer,” she said.

She insisted that AfriForum’s opposition to expropriation highlights their resistance to dismantling systemic inequality in South Africa.

“They have proven to be very selfish and committed to maintaining discrimination rather than supporting efforts for national transformation,” Mokonyane concluded.
