on

Eskom has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 300 days without load shedding in South Africa, a feat last achieved in June 2018. With the nation experiencing consistent power supply since March 2023, Eskom credits its Generation Recovery Plan for this success.

A Remarkable Achievement for Eskom

The power utility’s sustained performance has brought an end to frequent power cuts, with a notable reduction in unplanned outages. Eskom’s energy availability factor has improved by around 7%, while savings in diesel expenditure have amounted to R16.42 billion.

Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, expressed gratitude towards the utility’s 40,000 employees, attributing the success to their dedication. Looking ahead, Eskom is targeting one full year without load shedding, with March 26, 2025, set as the milestone for a complete year of uninterrupted power supply.

Boosting Business Confidence and South Africa’s Economic Outlook

Eskom’s recovery efforts are contributing to a shift in public sentiment and business confidence. According to Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane, the improved performance has garnered positive responses from credit rating agencies and banks. This recovery is seen as a key driver for boosting South Africa’s GDP growth, which is projected to reach up to 2%.

Marokane also highlighted that businesses, once forced to invest in self-generation systems, are now considering reverting to Eskom for their power needs. The utility’s strategic savings from reduced diesel expenditure are being reinvested into the business, further driving efficiencies and positioning Eskom for long-term operational and financial sustainability.

Future Goals and Sustainability

Eskom’s success is rooted in its ongoing commitment to structural improvements and operational efficiencies. The utility’s goal of achieving a year without load shedding is part of a broader strategy to ensure South Africa’s energy future is both stable and sustainable.
