Man in Court for Allegedly Killing Tuck Shop Owners for Cigarettes and Cash in Front of Their Children

A 23-year-old man, Kagiso Stock Malematje, recently appeared before the Brits Magistrate’s Court facing serious charges for allegedly murdering two tuck shop owners in Maboloka village, North West province.
On Thursday, January 16, Malematje, along with three other men, allegedly carried out a violent attack on the tuck shop owners in the early hours of the morning. The group reportedly stole cash, cigarettes, airtime, and two cellphones from the victims before fatally shooting them in front of their two young children.
According to Lumka Mahanjana, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, a witness reported the crime to the police the following day. Malematje was arrested later that same day, and another male suspect believed to be involved in the crime was apprehended but has yet to appear in court.
The case has been postponed to February 17 to allow authorities more time for investigation.
This case follows a similar incident in the Northern Cape in October 2024, when 31-year-old Mohammed Ferazi, a Bangladeshi national, was brutally attacked and killed at his tuck shop in Kathu. CCTV footage captured the horrifying moment when Ferazi was struck multiple times with a hammer by an assailant who had entered the shop.
The two suspects in Ferazi’s murder, Kgotso Gaobuse and Mosimanegape Bloem, have since appeared in the Kathu Magistrate’s Court, facing charges for the murder and robbery of the tuck shop.
As the court proceedings continue for both cases, local authorities are focusing on investigating these violent crimes against tuck shop owners and ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
