EFF to Report Kenny Kunene to SAHRC Over Controversial Remarks

Published

on

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have announced their intent to report Kenny Kunene, Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport and Patriotic Alliance deputy president, to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). This follows Kunene’s controversial remarks on social media, which the EFF claims incite violence against illegal miners.

On January 19, Kunene posted a graphic image on X (formerly Twitter) showing skinned sheep hung on hooks, likening their fate to what he envisions for illegal miners. In his post, Kunene wrote:

“This is the chilling fate that awaits all illegal miners robbing South Africans of their natural resources and wealth when the Patriotic Alliance takes over government.”

His comments, which metaphorically suggested violent actions against illegal miners, have been widely condemned.

The EFF has labeled Kunene’s remarks as reckless, dehumanizing, and a blatant incitement to violence. EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys stated:

“Kenny Kunene’s actions are appalling and dangerous. His comments disregard the Constitution and the rule of law, setting a precedent for violence and lawlessness.”

The EFF also accused Kunene of using hate speech to exploit sensitive issues like illegal mining for political gain, promoting xenophobia, and undermining human rights.

Next Steps by the EFF

The EFF plans to:

  • Report Kunene to the SAHRC for hate speech and incitement to violence.
  • Approach the City of Johannesburg’s Ethics Committee to seek sanctions against Kunene.
  • Urge the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to penalize the Patriotic Alliance for promoting hate speech.

“Immigration and crime are sensitive topics that require lawful and measured solutions,” Mathys added.

Background on Illegal Mining in South Africa

Kunene’s remarks come amidst heightened tensions around illegal mining, exacerbated by recent incidents like the Stilfontein Mine tragedy. While illegal mining is a significant issue in South Africa, critics argue that inflammatory rhetoric worsens the situation by promoting xenophobia and division.

The Patriotic Alliance has yet to respond to the EFF’s allegations. Updates will follow as new information emerges.
