The Witbank Regional Court in Mpumalanga has sentenced 60-year-old Fanie Petros Mtshali to 15 years in prison for the brutal murder of his 24-year-old daughter.

The tragic incident occurred on September 10, 2022, when the victim returned home late and was confronted by her father. According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Mtshali reprimanded his daughter for her late return, leading to a heated argument.

During the altercation, Mtshali slapped his daughter, causing her to fall into a television set. Tragically, the impact resulted in fatal injuries, and she died at the scene.

Emergency medical services and law enforcement were called to the home in Phola, near Witbank. The victim was declared dead on arrival, and her father was arrested the following day, September 11, 2022, and charged with murder. He was denied bail and remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings.

In court last week, Mtshali was sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment. Additionally, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm under the Firearms Control Act.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the sentence, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help to resolve family conflicts rather than resorting to violence.

“This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence,” Mkhwanazi said. “Families should seek help from professionals when dealing with conflicts.”

This case follows other recent violent domestic incidents, including the arrest of a 22-year-old man in Limpopo last year, accused of murdering his two-year-old son and mutilating the child’s body. The man was arrested by police after community members alerted them to the crime.
