Johannesburg Metro Cop Bribery Scandal: Investigation Underway

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched an internal investigation into allegations that some of its officers are soliciting bribes from the public. Reports suggest that these illicit payments are being made via e-wallet services and untraceable cellphone numbers, making it difficult to track those involved.
According to an article by Fourways Review, multiple incidents have been reported where metro officers allegedly demand bribes from motorists and other members of the public.
JMPD’s Response: Zero Tolerance for Corruption
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla reassured the public that the department is taking the allegations extremely seriously, stating, “We are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We urge the public to be vigilant and aware of this alleged practice.”
JMPD Chief of Police Patrick Jaca echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that corruption will not be tolerated within the ranks of the metro police.
“These alleged actions are a betrayal of public trust and undermine the department’s commitment to serving the community with integrity,” Jaca said. “Any officer found guilty of engaging in corrupt activities will face the strictest disciplinary action, including criminal prosecution.”
Jaca also warned that bribery is a two-way crime, cautioning motorists that offering a bribe is also a serious offence that could result in arrest and prosecution.
How to Report Corruption
JMPD is urging the public to report any suspected bribery incidents through the following channels:
JMPD Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline: 080 020 3712
Internal Affairs Unit Office: Village Main Road & Loveday Street, Wemmer
WhatsApp: 063 253 1928
Chief of Police Patrick Jaca: 082 559 3880
By encouraging public participation in exposing corruption, JMPD aims to restore trust in law enforcement and maintain accountability within its ranks.
