Johannesburg Mayor Vows to Revive City Amid Ramaphosa’s Criticism

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has committed to restoring the city’s reputation following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent criticism over its declining state.
During a two-day meeting with city management and Gauteng officials, Ramaphosa voiced his dissatisfaction with the city’s service delivery failures. Johannesburg, often referred to as the “city of gold” and South Africa’s economic powerhouse, has faced years of mismanagement, leaving several areas in disrepair.
Ramaphosa expressed his concerns, noting that the environment in some parts of the city was far from ideal. “One or two meetings that I attended here were not very pleasing,” he remarked, urging the need for significant improvement.
In response, Morero reassured residents and officials that the city would undergo a thorough restoration. He emphasized Johannesburg’s crucial role in the country’s economy, stating, “Johannesburg cannot fail. It contributes just around 16% towards the GDP. All of us have to come together to make Johannesburg work.”
The city, which recently hosted the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, has faced challenges like potholes, malfunctioning traffic lights, and crumbling infrastructure. Ramaphosa also called for action to address the city’s governance failures, crime, and unreliable services.
“We are proud South Africans, and we must rise above these challenges to present Johannesburg in the best light possible,” Ramaphosa urged.
Morero’s pledge to revitalise Johannesburg comes at a pivotal time, with the city needing collective efforts to secure its future as a leading economic hub.
