Witness Shot Dead Outside Lenasia Court Before Testifying in Murder Trial

A shocking incident unfolded outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning, where a key witness in a 2021 Eldorado Park murder case was fatally shot.
The witness, who was set to testify in the trial, was attacked alongside another man who was also a witness in the case. The assailants reportedly approached the duo outside the court and opened fire without uttering a word.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched a manhunt for the two suspects involved in the brutal attack.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the killing and described the events leading up to the shooting.
“The case was set for trial today. Two witnesses were standing outside the court when they were accosted by two armed suspects who started shooting at them without saying a word. We have since opened a case of murder,” Masondo said.
The court premises were temporarily closed following the incident, as police cordoned off the area for investigations.
This tragedy is not an isolated case. Last year, three individuals were executed in Mtwalume, KwaZulu-Natal, after leaving a court. In that incident, suspects in two vehicles ambushed the victims, killing them on the spot and fleeing the scene.
Such attacks raise serious concerns about the safety of witnesses involved in high-profile cases.
The latest killing highlights the urgent need for enhanced witness protection measures in South Africa. Witness intimidation and targeted attacks undermine the judicial process and threaten the pursuit of justice.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about the Lenasia shooting to come forward.
