‘No Parent Should Bury Their Child’: Grade 4 Pupil Dies After Choking at Limpopo School

A tragic incident at Moriting Primary School in Mankweng, Limpopo, has left a community in mourning after a Grade 4 pupil died on Monday from choking on a pen cap.

The Limpopo Department of Education confirmed the young learner accidentally swallowed the cap and quickly alerted her teacher, saying she was struggling to breathe. Staff rushed her to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

Shock and sorrow in the school community

The news has devastated classmates, teachers, and the broader school community. Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya extended condolences to the family and those affected, describing the incident as heartbreaking.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family during this heartbreaking time. No parent should have to bury their child,” said the MEC. “To her little classmates and teachers, we encourage them to stay strong.”

Department spokesperson Mike Maringa confirmed that psychosocial support teams have been sent to both the family and the school to help them cope with the trauma.

The department has called on learners and staff to lean on each other for emotional support during this difficult period.
