‘Her Child Keeps Asking for Her’: Court Delays Deepen Family Pain

The grieving family of Johannesburg scientist Dorcas “Didi” Lekganyane says her mother is too emotionally shattered to continue attending court proceedings, months after the young mother was allegedly murdered by her husband.

Lekganyane was found dead in her Bramley home last July, having suffered multiple stab wounds. Her husband, Cecil Kekana, was discovered unconscious nearby after reportedly attempting to take his own life. He survived and now faces charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

On Tuesday, Kekana was due to apply for bail at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. However, the hearing was postponed due to a power outage at the court building.

‘We don’t know what to tell her child’

Lekganyane’s uncle, Dr Robert Lekganyane, said her mother and four-year-old daughter have been deeply affected.

“The child keeps asking about her mom. We don’t even know how to answer. Didi’s mother is completely broken. We agreed she should only attend court again when the trial begins,” he said outside court.

He also expressed concern about repeated delays in the case.

“There have already been multiple postponements – in July, September, November, February, and last Friday. And now today. This delay was due to a power cut, and the court couldn’t proceed. But every postponement adds a risk of the process being tampered with,” he warned.

Bail application based on ‘new facts’

Kekana had previously abandoned his bid for bail, but indicated in February that he would reapply based on new information. The application will now be heard on April 24.

The murder of Dorcas Lekganyane shocked the local community, and her family continues to seek justice as court delays add to their trauma.
