The Nelspruit police station in Mpumalanga was temporarily evacuated on Friday evening following a bomb threat.

Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the threat came after a report from a private security company. The report indicated that a bomb was allegedly planted within the police station.

“The police are investigating the bomb threat incident. It is said that a member of the explosive unit received information from a Polsec member around 7 pm on Friday regarding the alleged bomb threat at the Nelspruit police station,” Ndubane explained.

As a precaution, the police summoned all necessary units, including the K9 unit, and evacuated the station’s staff, disrupting normal operations.

A comprehensive search by explosives and K9 units was carried out to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

“After the search, no explosives were found, and the investigation is ongoing to trace the source of the bomb threat,” she added.

Normal services at the Nelspruit police station resumed around 9 pm.

This incident follows a similar bomb threat at the Durban Magistrate’s Court last year, which prompted another investigation and evacuation. In that case, KwaZulu-Natal police conducted a precautionary search after a call reported a bomb was set to detonate at 10:30 am. The public was evacuated, and a sweeping search was conducted with no bomb discovered.
