SAA Relaunches Johannesburg-Dar es Salaam Flights to Strengthen African Connections

South African Airways (SAA) is set to relaunch daily flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, starting Monday, January 20, 2025. This marks a significant step in reconnecting two of Africa’s most influential economies while fostering trade and development across the continent.
SAA’s acting CEO, Professor John Lamola, emphasized the importance of this relaunch in strengthening ties between South Africa and Tanzania.
“This flight is not simply a milestone for SAA and linking Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam through air travel; it heralds a bridge that connects two of Africa’s most influential economies and strengthens the friendship between our nations,” Lamola said.
He highlighted that the connection would benefit industries, communities, and resources, opening opportunities for trade, investment, and economic growth.
Lamola also noted that SAA’s regional network has become a top performer, contributing significantly to the airline’s revenue. The relaunch aligns with SAA’s broader strategy to enhance its presence across Africa.
“These regional connections are crucial for the broader economic growth of South Africa,” he added.
Flight Schedule
The new schedule ensures convenience for both point-to-point and connecting passengers.
- From Johannesburg to Dar es Salaam: Departing at 10:00 PM and arriving at 2:30 AM.
- From Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg: Departing at 5:10 AM and arriving at 7:55 AM.
SAA’s Growing Footprint
In addition to the Dar es Salaam relaunch, SAA has recently expanded its services:
- Regional Expansion:
- Increased flights to Harare (12 weekly flights).
- Boosted Lusaka routes from 7 to 12 weekly flights.
- Added a new route to Lubumbashi, DRC.
- Expanded services to Kinshasa with five weekly flights.
- Domestic Growth:
- Increased flights to Gqeberha to three times daily.
- Intercontinental Growth:
- Enhanced flight frequency to Perth, Australia, now operating five times weekly since January 7, 2025.
The relaunch of the Johannesburg-Dar es Salaam route underscores SAA’s commitment to rebuilding its network and contributing to the economic integration of the African continent. With strategic expansions in regional and intercontinental routes, SAA continues to position itself as a key player in Africa’s aviation industry.
