Boy dies after school brawl in Isithebe, KZN

A boy in the Isithebe area of northern KwaZulu-Natal died after suffering head injuries in a fight at a high school on Tuesday. Emergency responders from IPSS Medical Rescue attended the scene and found the boy had succumbed to his injuries, the service said.

Emergency response and investigation

IPSS Medical Rescue said it had been called to a high school in Isithebe after reports that a learner had been struck on the head and left unconscious following a physical altercation with another student. On arrival, medics found the boy had died. Local SAPS personnel have taken over the scene and will investigate the matter further. The name of the school has not been made known at the time of reporting.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” IPSS stated.

The death comes days after the iLembe District Municipality held the Boys to Men Programme 2026 at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Secondary School. The event, organised with the Men’s Sector to mark the end of Men’s Month and Mandela Month, focused on values, accountability, positive fatherhood and rejecting violence.

District HIV/Aids coordinator Deon Malevu urged learners to remember their identity and to leave weapons such as guns and knives behind, telling them to walk away from violence and be changed by the event. iLembe District Mayor Councillor Thobani Shandu spoke about choices and community responsibility, warning against learners carrying weapons to school and being used by adults to push drugs, and emphasising education as the route to success.

Pastor Nelson Mkhize of Father’s Matter discussed fatherhood at the event, saying 60% of South African children grow up without fathers and linking that to social ills including crime, bullying and substance abuse. The School Governing Body chairperson Njabulo Mhlongo urged learners to protect their futures and choose truthful friends.

“Contributions and guidance were also shared by representatives from SAPS KwaDukuza Crime Prevention as well as the departments of Social Development and Health, reinforcing a multi-sectoral approach to guiding our young men,” said Sipho Mkhize, KwaDukuza Municipality spokesperson.
