Four killed and a child wounded in suspected gang shooting in Wesbank
Evening shooting in Wesbank leaves four dead and a child injured
Four people were fatally shot and a seven-year-old child injured in Wesbank, Blue Downs, during a shooting on Saturday evening, police said.
What happened
Police responded to a complaint on Strandveld Street at about 8pm and found three adult females and one adult male, each aged between 32 and 39, with gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared the four adults deceased at the scene, and the injured seven-year-old was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Police response and investigation
The South African Police Service has mobilised specialised units and the Serious and Violent Crime Unit is conducting the investigation. Authorities have opened investigations for four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
“The circumstances surrounding the shooting are currently under investigation by the Serious and Violent Crime Unit, and no arrests have been made at this stage,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut.
Possible motive and wider context
Police said preliminary inquiries have suggested the attack may be gang-related. The shooting is the latest in a series of mass attacks affecting the Cape Flats area, where community policing forums have been calling for increased police visibility and stricter action against illegal firearms.
