A Gauteng man who was allegedly kidnapped on August 30, 2026, in Johannesburg’s CBD has been rescued unharmed after police traced a cellphone used to demand a $2 million ransom, authorities said.

Investigation led to arrests and rescue

Gauteng police confirmed the case was registered at Johannesburg Central Police Station and described the operation as intelligence-driven. A multidisciplinary team including Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Team, the Flying Squad and private security companies carried out the investigation.

Break in the case

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, police arrested three men who were found in possession of the cellphone allegedly used to contact the victim’s family to demand the ransom, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said.

Victim located in Randfontein

Further inquiries led investigators to a plot in Randfontein where the man was located and safely rescued, Nevhuhulwi said. Two additional suspects were arrested at the premises.

“All five suspects are expected to face charges of kidnapping and extortion. The investigation continues,” Nevhuhulwi said.
