A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly robbing a courier van, and kidnapping the driver of the courier company

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s K9 unit arrested a 22-year-old man on charges of hijacking and possessing an unlicensed firearm in Finetown, south of Johannesburg. The incident occurred when hijackers targeted a courier bakkie, unaware that police were monitoring the situation as reported by IOL.

On September 6, while on patrol, JMPD officers encountered a hijacking in progress in Zakariyya Park. The suspects had forced the victim into the back of a courier bakkie. The officers activated their blue lights and sirens, initiating a high-speed chase from Zakariyya Park to Finetown.

During the pursuit, two of the suspects managed to escape by jumping out of the moving vehicle. However, one male suspect was apprehended and found possessing an unlicensed firearm.

The arrested man was taken into custody at Lenasia South SA Police Service (SAPS), and the hijacked courier vehicle was seized and impounded at the SAPS Lenasia pound.

This incident is reminiscent of a previous courier vehicle robbery in Witbank, where armed individuals stopped a DSV courier bakkie, robbing the driver of approximately 40 cell phones and forcing him into the back of the bakkie container before fleeing. Police arrested two suspects in that case and recovered the stolen items and an unlicensed firearm.

The 22-year-old suspect arrested in the Finetown incident now faces charges related to hijacking and illegal firearm possession.
