Jub Jub back in Germiston court over alleged Edenvale firearm incident

Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, widely known as Jub Jub, returned to the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges linked to an alleged June incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale.

What he is charged with

Police have charged Jub Jub with discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing an object likely to cause a person to believe it was a firearm.

Allegations from the June 14 incident

According to police accounts, the matter began after an e-hailing driver dropped Jub Jub’s girlfriend at a residence in Edenvale. Jub Jub is alleged to have accused the driver of being in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.

The incident reportedly escalated when Jub Jub forced the e-hailing driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the encounter, Jub Jub is alleged to have discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver. The e-hailing driver escaped unharmed and drove to a nearby police station to report the matter.

Legal steps and bail

After his arrest, Jub Jub brought an urgent application in the Johannesburg High Court, raising concerns about the delay in his appearance before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court and seeking bail pending his first court appearance. The High Court granted that application on 16 June and ordered his release on R5,000 bail.

Past legal history

The media personality and Uyajola 9/9 presenter has a prior conviction: in 2012 he was convicted for his role in a crash that claimed the lives of four schoolchildren. In 2024, separate charges of rape, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were withdrawn against him.

The matter returned to the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday as proceedings continue.
