Nageng Primary's Eco-Friendly New Library

Nageng Primary School (NPS) witnessed an exciting development on September 7, as they celebrated the launch and handover of a brand-new library courtesy of Danone and various stakeholders. Located at 3859 Sebati Road in Vosloorus, the library inauguration was a momentous occasion for the school’s young “planet protectors” (learners).

The event saw the presence of notable figures, including CoE Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana, the MEC for Social Development, Agriculture, and Rural Development, Mbali Dawn Hlophe, Ward 107 ANC Clr Goje Thabani Mose, and Hervé Orama Barrere, the Managing Director at Danone Southern Africa, who jointly inaugurated and handed over the library.

This newly constructed library is a remarkable addition to the school, offering an enriching learning environment. It is equipped with tables, chairs, and shelves filled with various books. In addition, the library features board games, laptops, a projector, a sound system, and a printer. Importantly, it will be staffed by a full-time librarian hired from within the Vosloorus community.

What sets this library apart is its pioneering construction. It is the first of its kind, constructed using lightweight bricks made from recycled yoghurt tubs. These tubs were collected as part of a competition initiated by Danone and its planet protectors across South Africa.

Leanne Kiezer, Danone’s Corporate Affairs Manager, explained the process of turning yoghurt tubs into bricks. The tubs were cleaned and processed into granulates, which were then mixed with other plastic types to form a cement-like substance. This cement, with added aggregate, was moulded into bricks. The result is environmentally friendly and insulating bricks that are not only safe for construction but also lighter to transport and approved by the Green Building Council of South Africa, meeting SABS standards.

The library is a source of excitement and promise for the students. Bohlale Lekota, a Grade Seven learner and NPS head boy expressed his enthusiasm for the library, particularly for the drama and action books it offers. Maphobo Sitsha, another 13-year-old student, was equally thrilled, emphasising how the library opened doors to explore a world of diverse knowledge through the wide array of books.

Principal Lefty Monobe emphasised the significance of knowledge and how the library would empower the learners with access to information. He lauded the project, highlighting the immense benefit it would bring to the students.

Mayor Ngodwana commended the young “planet protectors” for their responsible actions and dedication. He praised the corporate and social investment initiatives that led to the creation of the library, emphasising the importance of unity among residents, government, and businesses in nurturing the next generation and providing them with boundless opportunities. Ngodwana encouraged further collaboration to enrich Ekurhuleni and its communities.
