New Primary School Construction Faces Opposition from Pretoria North Residents
Tensions are running high in a Gauteng suburb. According to SABC News, residents and business owners oppose the Gauteng Basic Education Department establishing a new primary school in Pretoria North.
The department’s intention behind setting up the school is to alleviate overcrowding at local schools and cater to the influx of learners from nearby townships and villages to the north. The proposed plan involves converting a dilapidated building at the intersection of Van Riebeeck and Rachel De Beer streets into a fully-fledged primary school, accommodating around 600 students from grades one to six.

However, concerned community members argue that the new school will strain the area’s infrastructure. It will overload the sewerage system and electrical network while exacerbating traffic issues.
As the dispute intensifies, the community seeks legal action to prevent the department’s plans for the new school.
