JMPD intercepts vehicle in Lufhereng, arrests two and recovers illegal firearms

Two men were arrested and illegal firearms recovered on Monday afternoon, 24 August 2026, after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit officers intercepted a vehicle in Lufhereng during a targeted crime‑prevention operation.

Targeted operation leads to interception

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said TRU officers received operational information about an impending illegal firearm transaction in the Lufhereng area. The tip reportedly described two male suspects operating a white Toyota Vitz.

Officers deployed to the area and set up surveillance. According to Fihla, officers then spotted a vehicle matching the description and carried out a tactical interception.

“Officers activated their blue lights and sirens to perform a tactical interception, successfully bringing the vehicle to a safe stop,”

Search, seizure and arrests

Fihla said the suspects were ordered to exit the vehicle “under secure conditions.” After introducing themselves and obtaining consent to search the vehicle, officers found one rifle with magazine, one pistol with magazine and live ammunition (matching calibre).

Both suspects were detained on site. The South African Police Service Local Criminal Record Centre was called to the scene to secure evidence and carry out forensic processing.

Charges and investigation

The two suspects face charges related to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. JMPD said an investigation into the origin of the weapons is ongoing.

JMPD noted that the TRU recently made another high‑profile arrest connected to the Westbury mass shooting that left four dead. Acting on a tip‑off last week, officers intercepted that suspect in Lenasia South and recovered an illegal revolver and, later, a submachine gun with live ammunition. The suspect faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and prohibited weapons, and investigations into his role in the attack are continuing.

JMPD commended the swift action of the TRU officers and reaffirmed its commitment to removing illegal weapons from Johannesburg streets to help ensure community safety.
