NPA ready to prosecute Jub Jub over Edenvale firearm incident

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it is ready to proceed with prosecution in the matter involving media personality Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, known as Jub Jub. The case relates to an incident in Edenvale and returns to the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on September 7.

Court appearance, warrant and next date

Jub Jub was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday but did not attend because of alleged ill health. A warrant of arrest was issued and then held over until his next court appearance on September 7.

Charges and circumstances

He faces charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing anything likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm. The case stems from an incident on June 14 involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials seized a pellet gun at Jub Jub’s residence.

State response

The Gauteng spokesperson for the NPA, Magaboke Mohlatlole, said the State was ready to proceed.

“The matter was previously postponed to allow for the completion of further investigations. The NPA confirms that the State is ready to proceed with the prosecution and remains committed to ensuring that the matter is dealt with fairly and in accordance with the law,”

Mohlatlole’s statement confirmed the NPA’s position that it is prepared to move forward with the prosecution after investigations were completed.

Allegations and legal action

According to police, the incident began after Jub Jub allegedly accused the e-hailing driver of being in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend following a drop-off at a residence in Edenvale. The matter reportedly escalated when Jub Jub allegedly forced the driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving, and he allegedly discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver. The e-hailing driver escaped unharmed and reported the incident to police.

After his arrest, Jub Jub brought an urgent application before the Johannesburg High Court, raising concerns about the delay in his appearance before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court and seeking bail pending his first court appearance. He was granted bail of R5,000.

What happens next

The matter is set to return to the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on September 7, where the NPA has said it is ready to proceed with prosecution.
