More than one million trees have been planted in Gauteng since April under the Presidential One Billion Trees Programme, Joburg Etc reports .

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) recorded 1 012 051 trees planted in Gauteng between 1 April and late September 2026. The province was among the top three contributors, alongside the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Nationally, 7 134 711 trees have been planted since the start of the 2026/27 financial year, according to the department. The Western Cape recorded the highest provincial total at 2 053 786, while KwaZulu-Natal reached 1 052 494.

The programme aims to plant one billion trees over five years and forms part of the National Greening Programme. Government says the initiative supports environmental conservation, climate resilience and greener communities.

Gauteng also featured in the national Heritage Day planting drive on 24 September, with activities held in Noordgesig, Soweto. The campaign brought together government representatives and communities.

The department has encouraged South Africans to continue planting throughout the year and register trees using photographs and GPS coordinates through the department’s online platform.

With Gauteng passing the one-million mark, the province has contributed more than 14% of trees planted nationally since April.
