Scholar transport driver shot dead in Westbury after drop-off

A 53-year-old scholar transport driver was fatally shot in Westbury on 7 September 2026 after he had dropped off schoolchildren, police and local officials said.

What happened

According to preliminary reports, the driver had just completed a school drop-off and was about to park when he was approached by two unknown suspects. The suspects opened fire and fled the scene. The driver sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

Police response

Gauteng police received a complaint at approximately 08:10. Officers found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds and launched a manhunt for the two suspects.

Official reaction

The City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety MMC, Cllr Moshe Koma, condemned the killing and said authorities were deeply concerned because the victim provided an essential service transporting children. Cllr Koma called on law-enforcement agencies to act swiftly to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Family and community impact

The victim’s cousin described the family’s grief, saying the family was broken and that the driver “doesn’t get to see his unborn grandchild.” He recalled speaking to the driver the night before and receiving a message from him the morning of the shooting.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity to law enforcement. The shooting, which took place after a school drop-off, has raised concerns about the safety of scholar transport in the area.
