Two men arrested after an attempted break-in at a Midrand residential complex were remanded in custody following their arrest in the early hours of 23 April, Midrand police said.

What happened

The incident occurred at around 03:23 when police responded to a 10111 call reporting a robbery in progress at a complex in Midrand. Officers found security officers and residents at the scene who indicated the suspects had been caught inside the complex.

Arrests and charges

Two men, aged 23 and 29, both from Soweto, remain in police custody on charges of attempted housebreaking and malicious property damage. Two vehicles in the complex were damaged during the incident.

The suspects appeared briefly in court on 28 April and were remanded to allow for further investigation. They are expected to return to court on 8 May.

Security and police collaboration

Midrand acting station commander, Colonel Hoseah Mantji, praised the swift response and cooperation between private security teams and residents.

“We encourage communities and stakeholders to continue working together to combat property-related, contact, and commercial crimes in Midrand. All thanks to the security companies that assisted; together, we can reduce crime levels,” Colonel Mantji said.

How the suspects were caught

According to Mantji, one suspect allegedly jumped over the wall and fled to a neighbouring complex, where security personnel on duty spotted and apprehended him before handing him over to police.

Ongoing effort

Mantji highlighted the importance of partnerships between police, security companies and residents in tackling criminal activity in gated communities across Midrand.
