Woman jailed seven years after using fake documents to secure iPhone 17 Pro Max
A 50-year-old woman was sentenced to seven years after using fraudulent identity documents and a bank statement to secure an iPhone 17 Pro Max on contract in Schweizer-Reneke.
A 50-year-old woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison after using fraudulent identity documents and a fake bank statement to obtain an Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max on contract at a retail store in Schweizer-Reneke, North West.
Guilty plea and sentence
Lynda Elize Schneider appeared at the Vryburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, October 5, where she pleaded guilty to fraud and contravening the Identity Act. She was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for fraud and three years for contravening the Identity Act; the sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective seven-year term. The court also declared Schneider unfit to possess a firearm.
How the contract was secured
Police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said the matter began at a cellular retail shop in Schweizer-Reneke in July 2025. In court, the state presented evidence that Schneider had sought to obtain an Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB on contract and had provided false documents as part of the application.
“The court heard that the accused visited the retail shop intending to obtain an Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB on contract,” Morake said.
“She submitted fraudulent identity documents and a bank statement to the salesperson, resulting in the cellphone contract being approved using false documents,” Morake said.
Investigation and prosecution
Morake said a police investigation led to Schneider being charged and brought before the court, where she admitted guilt.
“A diligent investigation by the police resulted in the accused being brought before the court, where she pleaded guilty and was convicted on both charges,” Morake said.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams praised the investigators and the prosecution. The commissioner applauded Detective Captain Martin Joseph of the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit for the investigation that led to Schneider’s prosecution and conviction and commended Advocate Mosegedi from the Director of Public Prosecutions for presenting the State’s case.
Police said the prosecution had contributed to “the successful outcome and ensuring that justice was served”.
