Kaizer Chiefs have bolstered their squad with the signing of teenage defender Kabelo Nkgwesa from their DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team. The 19-year-old is set to join the first team immediately and could make his debut in their Nedbank Cup match against Stellenbosch FC at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. The crucial fixture kicks off at 6 p.m.

Defensive Reinforcement for Chiefs

Nkgwesa’s promotion comes at a time when Chiefs find themselves in eighth place on the DStv Premiership log, with 28 points—27 behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Defensive struggles have been a major concern for the Soweto giants, with only one other top-eight team having conceded more than the 24 goals they have allowed this season.

His arrival could provide much-needed stability at the back, especially following the departure of Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, who left for Al-Ittihad in a reported R15 million deal last month. Chiefs have also recently welcomed Edmilson Dove back from injury, which should further strengthen their defensive options.

A Reward for Consistency

Nkgwesa’s management team, Mscsports Talent, confirmed the signing on social media, celebrating his promotion after an impressive DDC campaign.

“Congrats to Kabelo Nkgwesa, who’s been rewarded with a Kaizer Chiefs contract after impressing management with his outstanding performances in the current DDC campaign,” they posted on X.

Chiefs’ Recent Form

Chiefs head into the Nedbank Cup fixture on a high after securing a vital victory over Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday. Striker Ashley du Preez was the hero, scoring the winning goal in a match where Chiefs dominated, registering 17 shots to Magesi’s four.

While their performances have improved under new coach Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs’ league position remains underwhelming. After finishing 10th last season, they have only made marginal progress on the table. However, the addition of young talent like Nkgwesa signals a commitment to building for the future.
