Toyota Dominates South Africa’s Hybrid Car Market Thanks to Corolla Cross

Toyota has solidified its place as the dominant force in South Africa’s hybrid vehicle market. According to industry figures, the Japanese automaker’s Corolla Cross hybrid accounted for a staggering 74% of all full hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) sold in the country in 2024.
South Africa’s hybrid market has seen explosive growth in recent years. From just 266 sales in 2020, the market has accelerated to 13,604 hybrid vehicles sold in 2024 — a more than 5,000% increase compared to 2015. And leading that charge is Toyota.
The Corolla Cross Effect
The turning point came in 2021 with the launch of the locally assembled Corolla Cross HEV, which triggered a surge in consumer interest. In 2024 alone, 10,109 Corolla Cross hybrids were sold — nearly five times the volume of the next best-selling hybrid, the Toyota RAV4 (761 units).
Other top contenders included the Haval H6 (741 units) and the Haval Jolion (630 units), but Toyota models overwhelmingly dominated the top 20 rankings, including the Corolla, Corolla Hatchback, and the Crown.
Toyota’s grip on the market is so strong that it captured 67% of all new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in South Africa last year — without selling a single battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the country. This makes the company’s success entirely dependent on its hybrid offerings.
Hybrids Win in the Used Market Too
Toyota’s dominance isn’t limited to new vehicles. The Corolla Cross hybrid also leads the used hybrid market, with 950 units sold in 2024. The average price was R439,289, with an average mileage of 18,016km, making it a compelling choice for cost-conscious buyers looking for fuel efficiency.
Affordability and Features in the Corolla Cross Lineup
Three Corolla Cross HEV models are available in South Africa, all under R600,000. The entry-level 1.8XS HEV starts at R494,400, offering features like leather seats, a 10” infotainment display with wireless CarPlay, and a 7” combination meter.
More premium options include the 1.8XR HEV (R545,200) and the sportier 1.8GR-S HEV (R561,700), which add a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, 360° panoramic view monitor, and Toyota’s Safety Sense suite.
Real-World Fuel Savings
Toyota claims an average fuel consumption of 4.3ℓ/100km for the hybrid Corolla Cross, though real-world driving typically sees slightly higher figures.
A recent test by MyBroadband revealed that a Corolla Cross 1.8XS HEV traveling between Fourways and the Drakensberg averaged 5.1ℓ/100km. With fuel prices at R21.62 per litre in April 2025, the trip cost about R935, compared to nearly R1,300 in a comparable petrol vehicle.
In contrast, the internal combustion engine (ICE) Corolla Cross models are reported to average between 7.0–8.0ℓ/100km, depending on driving conditions. That means hybrid drivers can expect to save hundreds of rands on long trips — a major incentive in a country where fuel prices continue to rise.
Toyota’s local manufacturing investment in the Corolla Cross hybrid has paid off handsomely. With its unmatched market share in hybrid sales and clear fuel economy advantages, the brand is setting the standard for South Africa’s transition to greener motoring.
As battery electric vehicles continue to face infrastructure hurdles in the country, hybrids like the Corolla Cross may remain the most practical and popular option for years to come.
