Four-Day Water Outage Set to Hit Pretoria: Here’s What You Need to Know

If you live in Pretoria, now’s the time to fill your buckets, bottles, and bathtubs. A planned water shutdown is expected to affect large parts of the city for over four days, as Rand Water begins critical maintenance work on its infrastructure.
From Thursday, 29 May to Monday, 2 June 2025, water supply to several suburbs will be cut off or severely limited while maintenance is carried out on the Mapleton and Palmiet systems—two major pumping stations that supply Tshwane.
Why This Is Happening
The City of Tshwane confirmed that Rand Water will halt all pumping during this period to upgrade infrastructure. The maintenance is essential but will come at a cost: dry taps in dozens of homes and businesses.
To soften the impact, the city has pledged to fill affected reservoirs to at least 80% before the maintenance starts. Roaming water tankers will also be made available if necessary.
But officials are warning residents to use water sparingly and plan ahead.

What Residents Can Do Now
Here’s how you can prepare ahead of the water outage:
-
Store water in advance for cooking, cleaning, and flushing.
-
Keep bottles filled for drinking.
-
Limit non-essential water use in the days leading up to the shutdown.
-
Watch for alerts from the City of Tshwane on roaming tanker availability.
City Promises Support but Urges Caution
Technicians from the city will continue monitoring water levels and maintain operations at alternative water sources throughout the shutdown. However, disruptions are inevitable, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and patient.
With advance notice and some planning, residents can get through this outage with minimal disruption — but acting early is key.
