Mixed Forecast for South Africa’s Petrol Prices in June 2025

South African drivers may be in for a small relief at the pumps in early June, but economists warn that the picture could still shift in the coming days. According to the latest fuel projections from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), both petrol and diesel prices are expected to decline slightly—if current market trends hold.
Petrol and Diesel Prices May Drop—But Don’t Bank On It Yet
As of 26 May 2025, the CEF’s early outlook suggests the following potential changes:
Fuel Type | Expected Change |
---|---|
Petrol 93 | Decrease of 19 cents per litre |
Petrol 95 | Decrease of 19 cents per litre |
Diesel 0.05% | Decrease of 50 cents per litre |
Diesel 0.005% | Decrease of 50 cents per litre |
Paraffin | Decrease of 54 cents per litre |
This could be welcome news for many vehicle owners after a noticeable fuel price drop earlier in May, thanks to a stronger rand and softer brent crude oil prices. However, experts caution that things can change quickly in global markets.
Two Key Drivers of Fuel Prices
The price South Africans pay at the pump is shaped by two main factors:
-
Brent Crude Oil Price
At the time of writing, Brent crude is trading at $64.84 a barrel, a level that’s contributed to recent declines in local fuel prices. -
Rand-Dollar Exchange Rate
The current exchange rate sits at R17.88 to the US dollar, playing a crucial role in determining the final price of imported fuel.
Even minor shifts in either of these variables could significantly impact what you pay at the pumps next month.
When Will the Final Petrol Prices Be Announced?
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is expected to confirm the official prices at the start of June. These changes will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Until then, motorists are advised to drive cautiously and budget conservatively, as price fluctuations are still possible.
