“He Was Our Light”: Soweto Mourns Beloved Teacher Found Dead After Mysterious Disappearance

Shock and sadness ripple through Tetelo Secondary School and the greater Soweto community after a teacher reported missing for five days was found dead on Monday, 9 June 2025.
A Disappearance That Shook the Community
The 34-year-old English and isiZulu educator vanished on Wednesday, 4 June, after reportedly booking an e-hailing ride. That would be the last anyone saw of him alive. Days passed with no word — only mounting fear. On Monday, his family received the devastating confirmation: he had been found dead.
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed the tragedy in a statement that has since left students, teachers, and parents in a state of shock. Police have launched a full investigation, but for now, the cause and exact circumstances of his death remain under wraps.
A Teacher Who Meant the World to Many
To those at Tetelo Secondary School, he wasn’t just an educator he was hope in human form. He taught senior learners with passion and patience, guiding them through complex literature and cultural nuance in both English and isiZulu. But beyond the classroom, he was a mentor, a confidant, and a role model, especially to learners navigating tough socioeconomic realities.
“We have lost a beacon of hope,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane. “He was meant to empower young minds in the heart of Soweto, inspiring them to succeed beyond their capabilities.”
Chiloane’s words echoed the heartbreak of many, as tributes poured in on social media. Learners shared memories of his jokes, his guidance, and how he believed in them when no one else did. One student wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “He told me I could make it to university. I believed him. He made me believe in myself.”
Counselling Support Deployed
In response to the trauma facing the school, the Department of Education has deployed its Psycho-Social Support Unit to Tetelo Secondary. The team is providing counselling to both learners and staff struggling to come to terms with the loss.
“This is not just the loss of a teacher. It’s the loss of a future builder,” said department spokesperson Steve Mabona.
A Harsh Spotlight on Safety
While the investigation is still in its early stages, the tragedy has reignited concerns about the safety of public transport users and the broader issue of violent crime in Gauteng. Community members are questioning how a man could vanish during such a routine act requesting a ride and end up dead without answers.
“We are tired of burying our people without justice,” said one local resident. “Teachers are supposed to be safe. Who will protect those who protect our children’s futures?”
Justice Demanded
MEC Chiloane has called on the public to assist the police with any information that might help bring those responsible to justice.
“We share in your pain,” he told the grieving family, “and your plea for those responsible for this senseless crime to be apprehended speedily.”
As police dig deeper into what happened that night, one thing remains heartbreakingly clear: a family has lost a son, a school has lost a guide, and a community has lost a leader.
