Four men were shot dead in Nyanga, Cape Town, after unknown gunmen opened fire while they were repairing a flat tyre, police said.

What happened

Police said the victims were travelling in a Toyota Avanza along Old Klipfontein Road at about 9.55pm on Saturday when they stopped to repair a flat tyre. While they were attending to the vehicle, unknown gunmen approached and opened fire.

The four men sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, police said.

Investigation under way

Serious Violent Crime detectives have opened an investigation and have registered four counts of murder. The case has been handed over to the Serious Violent Crime Unit, police said.

Police said the motive for the attack is believed to be taxi-related, but added that this will form part of the ongoing investigation.
