‘Johannesburg Deserves Better’: DA Pushes to Oust Mayor Morero Over Failing Services

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is staring down a possible ousting as the Democratic Alliance (DA) launches a motion of no confidence against him, citing crumbling service delivery and deteriorating governance in the country’s economic hub.
Morero, who is also the ANC’s Johannesburg regional chairperson, will face the motion during a City Council meeting on Wednesday. The DA says his administration has failed the city’s residents.
“Johannesburg deserves better,” said the DA in a strongly worded statement.
Calls for accountability
The DA, which holds 71 of the council’s 270 seats, will need support from across the floor to reach the 136-vote threshold required to remove Morero.
Alongside Morero, Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu (ActionSA) and Chief Whip Sthembiso Zungu (ANC) are also facing no-confidence motions.
The DA alleges that:
-
Basic service delivery has collapsed under Morero’s watch,
-
Patronage networks are operating within the municipality,
-
Transparency and accountability have been eroded,
-
And democratic processes are being undermined by the Speaker’s partiality.
A city in crisis
Residents have experienced prolonged water outages, power failures, infrastructure decay, and delays in basic service provision.
The DA claims the current leadership has allowed the local government machinery to grind to a halt, resulting in communities being neglected.
“The DA will not stand by while Johannesburg is hijacked by narrow political interests,” the party added.
Speaker under fire
Speaker Mthembu, once considered neutral, is now being accused of protecting Morero, suppressing accountability, and disregarding council procedures.
The DA says she no longer acts as an impartial overseer and instead functions as a political ally of the mayor.
Opposition unity needed
For the motion to pass, the DA is calling on other opposition parties and independents to set politics aside and vote for change.
With Johannesburg’s governance hanging in the balance, Wednesday’s vote could signal a dramatic shake-up in the city’s leadership or a tightening grip by the ANC-led coalition.
The outcome will reveal whether councillors are prepared to prioritise residents or political loyalty.
