Power Cuts Roll On: Eskom Confirms Load Reduction Across Gauteng This Week

Daily outages continue to disrupt communities in Soweto, Orange Farm, Vosloorus, and more.

As winter tightens its grip and energy demand surges, Gauteng residents are again bracing for blackouts. Eskom has confirmed its weekly load reduction schedule for Monday, 7 July to Sunday, 13 July, and it’s not good news for those living in key areas across the province.

While load shedding has become a national frustration, Eskom’s load reduction programme is a targeted intervention—separate from general load shedding, designed to prevent network overload and infrastructure damage in high-density, high-consumption areas. That means specific townships and suburbs are cut off from electricity during peak morning and evening hours, even when the rest of the country isn’t experiencing scheduled outages.

Who’s Affected and When?

The schedule shows continued power interruptions for both morning (5am–9am) and evening (5pm–10pm) slots.

Morning outages hit areas like:

  • Evaton

  • Vosloorus Extensions

  • Moleleki and Hlongwane

  • Sebokeng and Orange Farm Extensions

Evening reductions will impact:

  • Mabopane and Ivory Park

  • Kagiso and Khutsong Extensions

  • Protea City, Graceland and Havana

  • Multiple parts of Soweto and Orange Farm

Some of the other specifically listed areas for this week include:

  • Monise

  • Mokoena

  • Dube

  • Duduza

  • Mofolo East, West and South

  • Spruit View

  • Thabiso

How the Schedule Works

The schedule rotates weekly and is designed to give affected communities some predictability. Although frustrating, the rotation aims to balance energy use and reduce the risk of total grid failure in areas already suffering from illegal connections, tampering, and overloaded infrastructure.

Still, many Gauteng residents are left asking: Why always us?

Public Frustration Mounts

Social media users in places like Soweto and Orange Farm continue to express anger and exhaustion. On X (formerly Twitter), one user posted, “We can’t keep running small businesses with 5-hour power cuts every day. It’s killing our hustle.”

Another commented, “Load reduction is just load shedding with another name. No lights. No power. Just vibes.”

Where to Find Your Schedule

If you’re unsure whether your area is listed, Eskom has made the load reduction schedule for Gauteng publicly available in a downloadable document here (or on their official website).

Gauteng remains one of the provinces hardest hit by Eskom’s targeted load reduction efforts. The utility has blamed this on high levels of infrastructure theft, illegal electricity connections, and overloaded transformers in urban settlements. In these areas, repairing damage and replacing components can run into millions of rands.

For now, the message is clear: expect daily disruptions, plan ahead, and stay informed. Until Eskom improves generation capacity and resolves deep-rooted infrastructure challenges, load reduction remains an unfortunate winter reality for many in Gauteng.
