Day 5 of bail hearing reveals critical inconsistencies and missing security logs

By all accounts, 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek should have been safe at home in Fleurhof, not at the centre of one of Johannesburg’s most emotionally charged court cases. But as his mother Tiffany Meek appears for the fifth day of her bail hearing in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, the picture of what happened to him continues to grow more complicated and more heartbreaking.

Meek, 31, stands accused of killing her own son. But the charges against her go even further, including crimen injuria, obstructing the course of justice, and tampering with evidence. Arrested at her mother’s house on July 11, Meek’s legal battle now rests on a tangled web of conflicting statements, questionable timelines, and mounting public scrutiny.

The Day Jayden Disappeared

Jayden-Lee was reported missing on May 13, 2025, triggering a community-wide concern in Fleurhof and social media outpourings from parents and activists alike. “We just want to know the truth,” one Facebook comment read on a neighbourhood watch post that has since gone viral. “Every child deserves safety.”

As court proceedings have shown, what he was wearing on the day he vanished has become a focal point. Defence attorney Noven Naidoo challenged the investigating officer over inconsistent descriptions of Jayden’s outfit—from Meek, his teacher, and the security guard. According to Meek, she helped him dress that morning in grey long pants, a white shirt, tie, and black takkies. But witnesses don’t all agree.

When asked, the police sergeant conceded he couldn’t say definitively, relying only on second-hand descriptions.

The Missing Entries

Then came the troubling detail that’s cast shadows over the investigation: the absence of early entries in the complex’s occurrence book.

According to court testimony, no official record of Jayden’s disappearance appeared in the OB until after 8pm—and only by the nightshift guard. But Meek’s lawyer says she notified the day shift guard after 5pm and left her phone number, asking to be called if Jayden returned.

“There is no record of this in the OB,” the investigating officer told the court.

It’s a gap that could shape how the court views the state’s version of events.

The Schoolbag and the Puzzle of Evidence

Another key element surfaced on day five: Jayden-Lee’s black schoolbag.

The investigating officer testified that he recovered the bag from Meek’s flat after discovering schoolwork dated May 13 inside—work allegedly completed on the very day the boy was reported missing. The prosecution argues that this contradicts Meek’s version of events. The bag has since been entered into evidence.

A Mother on Trial, A Nation Watching

The tragedy of Jayden-Lee’s death has struck a nerve in Johannesburg and beyond. The story has echoed in radio talk shows, parenting forums, and school WhatsApp groups. Questions swirl: Did the system fail Jayden? What truly happened in the hours between school and his reported disappearance?

And most of all: Was this a case of maternal betrayal, or a tragic misjudgement wrapped in procedural gaps?

As cross-examination continues, South Africans wait. Not just for justice, but for clarity.
