Mamelodi Father Gets Life for Decade-Long Abuse: A Betrayal Beyond Words

In a case that has left Mamelodi and the nation reeling, a 64-year-old father has been sentenced to life in prison for raping his own daughter over nearly a decade. The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court delivered the damning verdict this week, marking a rare but crucial victory in South Africa’s fight against gender-based violence (GBV).
But the details of this case go beyond the horror of the crime itself, they reveal a chilling betrayal of trust, psychological manipulation, and a justice system forced to reckon with a crisis that refuses to fade.
A Decade of Silent Suffering
The abuse began in 2010, when the victim was just nine years old. Her father, exploiting weekends and school holidays when she visited him, convinced her that rape was “normal” in families. He weaponized her mother’s heart condition as a threat: “Don’t tell her, it could kill her.”
For years, the young girl believed the lie.
Then, in 2018, a condom broke during one of the assaults. When she later discovered she was pregnant, her father handed her R1,500 for an abortion, another layer of trauma in an already unimaginable ordeal.
The Truth Finally Surfaces
The nightmare only ended in 2021, when the victim, now 19 confided in her boyfriend. Shocked, he alerted her mother, who immediately took action. The case was reported to Mamelodi East police, and the father was arrested the same day.
In court, he denied everything. But prosecutor Anton Burger dismantled his lies, exposing the calculated grooming and the devastating impact on the survivor.
“I cannot remember life without rape,” the victim wrote in her impact statement. “I lost my childhood. I live with depression, shame, and fear.”
No Mercy for a Monster
The father begged for leniency, claiming his family depended on him. The court refused.
Acting Magistrate Pierre Wessels called GBV “a pandemic” and condemned the accused’s lack of remorse. The life sentence was unavoidable.
A Nation’s Shame, A Survivor’s Strength
This case is not isolated. Just last year, a Limpopo man was arrested for repeatedly raping his 12-year-old daughter, resulting in multiple forced abortions.
The NPA has praised the Mamelodi verdict, calling it a step toward justice, but activists argue systemic change is still desperately needed.
“We must break the silence,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. “No child should endure this. No abuser should walk free.”
For now, the survivor’s courage has ensured her father will never harm her again. But for South Africa, the fight is far from over.
Why This Matters:
-
Cultural Context: In many South African communities, patriarchal norms and stigma still discourage survivors from speaking out.
-
Public Reaction: Social media has erupted with outrage, with many demanding harsher GBV laws.
-
The Bigger Picture: Over 10,000 rape cases were reported in SA last quarter alone, yet convictions remain low.
This case is a grim reminder of the work still needed. But it’s also proof that justice, however delayed, can prevail.
