‘Our Communities Are Not Safe’: Lotus River Shooting Sparks Outcry Over Gang Violence

A Thursday morning turned into tragedy in Lotus River, Cape Town, when a daylight shooting left one young man dead and four others wounded. The incident has reignited urgent demands for stronger action against crime in the area.
A Shocking Scene on Fifth Avenue
Residents of Fifth Avenue in Lotus River, a suburb within the Grassy Park precinct, were left rattled after gunfire broke out in broad daylight. South African Police Service spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that officers responded to the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
A 20-year-old man was found dead when police arrived. Four other males, aged between 20 and 72, were rushed to a medical facility with gunshot wounds. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Murder and attempted murder cases have been opened. Although authorities have not officially confirmed a link to gang activity, the nature of the attack has raised community concerns.
Communities Living in Fear
Ward 65 councillor Donovan Nelson was quick to speak out. He described the shooting as a brazen and violent act, once again forcing residents in surrounding areas like Lotus River, Ottery, Parkwood, and Pelican Park to live under a cloud of fear.
“This brazen act of violence, carried out in broad daylight, has once again highlighted the urgent need for decisive action,” Nelson said. “Criminal elements continue to terrorise our communities with no regard for human life.”
Pushing for Transparency and Police Presence
In direct response to the shooting, Nelson revealed that a community petition is underway to push for a public meeting between the community policing forum (CPF), SAPS, and residents. A venue has already been secured through the City of Cape Town.
“The goal is clear,” Nelson stated. “We need SAPS to present a transparent and detailed plan for increasing resources, improving visible policing, and restoring public confidence. This must happen with urgency and with full community involvement.”
He added that the community would not stand down until real change is visible on the ground. “Our residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, on their streets, and at their places of work.”
A City Desperate for Safety
While Cape Town’s gang crisis is concerning, the normalisation of gun violence in everyday settings continues to spark outrage. Locals have taken to social media platforms to express exhaustion, frustration, and fear over the frequency of shootings that make headlines for a day, only to be forgotten.
“Another day, another shooting. How many more lives must be lost before safety becomes a priority?” wrote one community member on Facebook.
For many in Lotus River and similar communities, the issue is not just crime but neglect. The call for more visible policing and proper resource allocation is not new, but the urgency is growing louder.
What You Can Do
Anyone with information about the Lotus River shooting is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the MySAPS mobile app anonymously. Residents are also encouraged to support the upcoming CPF meeting once confirmed.
