DA Leads in Fundraising for 2025/2026 Local Government Election

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is leading in election fundraising, securing R32,229,474.29 ahead of the 2025/2026 local government elections, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Under the Political Party Funding Act, all parties and independent candidates must declare donations above R200,000, with a maximum cap of R30 million per donor.

Major Contributions to the DA

The DA’s campaign war chest is dominated by donations linked to Michiel Le Roux, founder of Capitec Bank:

  • Fynbos Kapitaal – R15 million (24 June 2025)

  • Fynbos Ekwiteit – R10 million

Other notable contributions include:

  • Main Street 1564 (Pty) Ltd – R1,465,265

  • Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) – In-kind donation of R1,011,143.53 for training and skills development

  • Michael Stekhoven – R1,000,000

  • Estate of Melroy Sylvia Meyer – R570,208.05

  • Rustdene Investments – R300,000

  • Dalib Investments (Pty) Ltd – R250,000

  • Discovery Central Services – R250,000

  • Mrs Gina Liebenberg – R150,000

  • Dr Mark John Burke – R132,856.71

  • Mr Robert Breyer – R100,001

ANC and Other Parties Lag Behind

  • The ANC declared R7.2 million, with Chancellor House as its main contributor.

  • ActionSA reported R520,000, raised directly from its leader, Herman Mashaba.

Political Funding Trends

The IEC report shows a significant rise in declared political funding:

  • Q1 2025/2026: R40.4 million

  • Q4 2024/2025: R18.3 million

  • Q3 2024/2025: R14.1 million

The IEC expects this upward trend to continue as the election draws closer.

When Will the Election Take Place?

The IEC has not yet confirmed a date for the next local government election, but legislation requires it to be held between 1 November 2025 and 31 January 2026.
