Conlog Dismisses Spying and Health Risk Claims About Smart Meters in Endumeni
Conlog has rejected claims that its smart meters spy on households or emit harmful radiation, assuring Endumeni residents that the devices are safe and compliant with international standards.
Rumours addressed at community meeting
At a recent Endumeni Chamber of Business meeting, Conlog responded to rumours circulating about its rollout of 10,000 new smart meters in the municipality.
“Smart meters do not spy on households,” a Conlog spokesperson said. “They record energy usage data only for billing accuracy and customer insights. There is no surveillance mechanism, and they do not access private information.”
Industry observers including Clou Global and Eversource have published similar clarifications, reinforcing that the devices’ function is limited to energy data transmission.
Health concerns ruled out
Conlog also dismissed suggestions that the meters pose a health risk. The devices transmit data using non-ionising radio frequency radiation, the same type of low-level emissions produced by Wi-Fi routers and mobile phones.
“These transmissions are extremely low in power, intermittent, and fall well within global safety thresholds,” the spokesperson said, citing guidelines from GOV.UK and Canada.ca.
Health authorities have confirmed that non-ionising radiation at these levels has no proven harmful effects on human health.
Rollout progress in Endumeni
The National Treasury-funded rollout is set to be completed in Endumeni by 30 September. Conlog noted that it has already delivered six similar projects nationwide, including one in Bethlehem, where revenue collection rose by R12 million per month after the elimination of illegal electricity connections.
Conlog emphasised that the smart meters are fully compliant, safe, and designed to improve both service delivery and revenue collection in municipalities struggling with energy losses.
