If you thought cinema spaces were all about screening the latest blockbusters on the big screen, you would be correct. But, what if a cinema space is turned on its head to create an explosion of experiences that will keep the kids entertained for hours.

With the collaboration between Ster-Kinekor and JoziX Adventure Centre, two cinemas at Ster-Kinekor The Zone @Rosebank are offering just that, with their conversion into SKX-PERIENCE. The fun and entertaining interactive spaces will include activities such as the Gel Blaster, Nerf Zone, Archery Tag, and Axe Throwing, plus both a Splatter Room and Rage Room, where kids and adults alike can exhaust their excess energy – and inner frustrations! While most of the activities have a minimum age restriction of six years, only children aged eight years and older will be able to handle the axe throwing equipment.

“Opening the first of its kind SKX-PERIENCE at The Zone today expands our entertainment offering and gives children of all ages – from 6 to 96 – another outlet to hang out together, test their skills and chill in a safe and controlled environment. All the activities have been installed by Jozi-X, our partner in this revamped offering, and safety and security are a top priority.

“This is an exciting extension to our already popular cinema space at The Zone, and provides an alternative activity area for birthday parties, school outings or for a group of kids to exhaust that excess energy and spend some fun time together in a safe space,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor.

What was Cinema 3 now houses Gel Shot, Arch Rivals (Archery Tag) and Nerf Warz, while the space inside Cinema 4 offers Axe Throwing, and both the Rage and Splatter Rooms, with a number of the activities being interactive and team-based, to encourage problem-solving and competitiveness with fun at the centre.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with Ster-Kinekor to bring fresh excitement and dynamic alternative entertainment to audiences of all ages. Together, we’re creating an immersive, unforgettable experience for anyone looking for something beyond the ordinary,” said Marco Caromba, founder and MD of JoziX Adventure Centre.

Gel Shot is an arena-based games area, where various games can be played with two opposing teams. Like paintball, there is no paint! Each team member is given a gel shot blaster, which is an automatic blaster preloaded with gellets (water bullets) that pop on impact, a full-face mask to protect their face and the option of a cover jacket. This activity is fun for both kids & adults, the gellets are biodegradable and are less sore on impact compared to a paintball.

Arch Rivals (Archery Tag) is played the same way as dodgeball – two teams participate, and each player has their own bow and arrows; they are shown how to hold a bow and shoot an arrow first, which is followed by target practice. They are then divided into two teams and go head-to-head in a game of Archery Tag with dodgeball rules. Safety glasses/paintball masks are worn to protect the face, and the arrows are foam-tipped for extra safety.

In the arena-based game of Nerf Warz, players in two teams are each given a nerf blaster, which is preloaded with foam Nerf bullets, and wear safety glasses to protect their eyes. The teams go head-to-head against one another in games such as capture the flag and last man standing.

The Axe Throwing area comprises four axe throwing lanes, where individuals can learn and master the art of throwing an axe and hitting the target’s bullseye or various parts of the target to score points.

As its name explains, the Rage Room is a safe space where one or more individuals can engage their rage and break a variety of items, within a safe and controlled environment. These include old, broken appliances (microwaves, TVs, printers etc.), buckets of bottles and windscreens, and a variety of weapons to use to break the items! Each participant in the room will receive coveralls to cover their skin, safety gloves, a PPE face shield and ear plugs, to dress for the part and to ensure their own safety while in the room. The objective of the activity is to allow participants to experience something new and to have fun doing what they may have seen on TV, all within a safe, controlled environment.

And, for those who have always wanted to throw paint but not have to worry about cleaning up the mess afterward, the Splatter Room is the ultimate paint party! Participants play inside a closed, UV lit room using a variety of both UV and normal water-based paints (that can wash out!), paint brushes, a canvas and some spray bottles. How the paint gets onto the canvas – or all over each other – is up to each player, but wearing the supplied safety glasses, disposable gloves and shoe sleeves, and clear rain poncho to cover the body will help. There is no end to the creativity in the this room!
