Anele Mdoda joins the hype after Travis Scott’s mind-blowing Joburg concert

Joburg went sicko mode this weekend as Travis Scott finally took the stage and turned an anxious, sceptical crowd into true believers. What began as a wave of online doubt ended with shaking ground, lost voices, and one of the city’s loudest nights in recent memory.
Even Anele Mdoda, who attended with her godson and his friends for his 16th birthday, admitted she left as a fan. “Nah, I’m blown away! What an energy. I’ve never felt the ground shake at ANY concert; it did last night,” she wrote after the show.

From online chaos to pure euphoria
In the days leading up to the concert, the internet was buzzing, and not in a good way. South Africans were quick to drag the event before it even happened, with jokes flying about selling tickets faster than Black Friday returns.
Even Unathi Nkayi revealed that her son and his friends had tried to offload their tickets, unsure if it would be worth the money or the potential madness.
Then came the safety debates. TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) filled up with nervous commentary, referencing the Astroworld tragedy of 2021. Some joked about “training for a stampede,” while others worried about crowd control and security at the Johannesburg show.
Adding to the frenzy, a small corner of the internet pushed wild theories about “dark energy” and stage symbolism, proving once again that social media can turn anything into a saga.
We took my Godson and 16 of his friends for his 16th birthday to the show. Most of the time I was entertained by watching them watch the show. I love happy kids man. What a core memory as your first concert. Most of us this would have been Janet Jackson’s Velvet rope.

Travis brings the storm, literally
When Saturday finally arrived, the city braced for chaos, and in a twist only Joburg could deliver, a rainstorm almost delayed the show. The downpour forced crews to mop up the slick stage before Travis appeared.
Yes, he showed up late. Yes, he performed “Fein” about seven times. But once the lights hit and the bass dropped, every ounce of hesitation evaporated. The crowd went from cautious to uncontainable in seconds.
Fans described the night as “electric,” saying they could feel the ground vibrating beneath them. One user posted, “I came for Travis, but I left baptised in sound.”
My only and I mean only note is that his microphone was not clear when he was talking and the only reason I raise it is because I really wanted to hear what he was saying to move the crowds like that. Also the crickets sounds… I get it I get it… but do I get it? Please school…

Anele’s review: ‘Core memory unlocked’
Among the thousands in attendance, Anele Mdoda’s reaction summed it up best. She posted about how much joy it brought her to see her godson and his friends lose themselves in the experience:
“I love happy kids, man. What a core memory as your first concert.”
Even her light-hearted critique came with affection:
“His microphone was not clear when he was talking. Also, the cricket sounds… I get it, I get it… but do I get it?”
After the show, Travis tweeted, “Tonight showed me something different.” Anele replied, “Dude. I came as a spectator, I left as a fan. Your audience was unreal. My word, your fans dig the hell out of you.”
Dude. I’ve never experienced an audience like the one you had today. I came as a spectator, I left as a fan. My word your fans dig the hell out of you chap. https://t.co/yGVUQozb4f

Mzansi goes from sceptics to superfans
The turnaround was instant. From “we’re over it” to “he owes us another show,” Joburg’s mood flipped completely overnight. Fans who once mocked the event were suddenly uploading clips, tagging Travis, and asking for an encore tour stop.
For a city used to disappointment in its big events, this felt different, a rare moment where energy, sound, and sheer spectacle delivered exactly what fans hoped for.
Whether you were in the pit, on social media, or just watching the chaos unfold, one thing is clear: Travis Scott gave Joburg a concert it won’t stop talking about anytime soon.
