More than 200 residents of Damonsville, Brits forced their way into the Madibeng municipal building, locking staff and senior officials inside as they demanded urgent answers about a delayed electrification project.
Municipal staff and councillors, including Mayor Douglas Maimane, had to escape through the underground parking to avoid confrontation.
The protest stems from the municipality’s R25 million project to electrify 300 households, which has been stalled for over four months. Originally budgeted at R11 million, the project has nearly doubled in cost, raising concerns about mismanagement and inefficiency.
Residents accused the municipality of failing to monitor contractors, leaving communities without basic services despite promises.
Municipal manager Quiet Kgatla has been at the centre of the controversy. Early this year, he was accused of appointing a contractor irregularly, allegedly bypassing the official tender process.
Kgatla defended his decision, stating the appointment was an emergency measure after the initial contractor withdrew. He argued that decisive action was necessary to prevent unrest, following a violent protest by Damonsville residents in January demanding electrification.
The ANC in Bojanala region recommended Kgatla be suspended pending investigation, a move endorsed by provincial leadership. However, the municipal council, led by Mayor Maimane and Council Speaker Ditshego Mbezi, defied the recommendation.
The prolonged delays and administrative disputes have eroded public confidence in the municipality. Residents accuse leaders of prioritising political interests over service delivery, while officials warn that improper contractor appointments expose the municipality to legal and financial risks.
Damonsville residents say they will continue pressing for answers until the electrification project is completed and accountability is restored.
