A 38-year-old man was arrested yesterday in Pretoria after two young women were found shot dead on a roadside in Mamelodi East on Sunday. A third woman, also shot, is receiving treatment in hospital.
Police said the arrest followed a coordinated effort involving the Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Unit, Crime Intelligence, and Mamelodi East detectives. The suspect is expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
The identities of the victims, 21-year-old Tshiamo Moramaga and 22-year-old Baleseng Moramaga, were quickly shared on social media, raising alarm among residents about women’s safety in the area.
According to Tshwane police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the motive for the killings is still unknown.
Rural criminologist Witness Maluleka said the attack indicates the women were deliberately targeted. He noted that young people, particularly women, are often victims of violent crimes in South Africa.
“These cases are becoming increasingly common, and the deliberate targeting of women is deeply concerning,” he said.
Earlier incidents in Pretoria East, including the discovery of five young women’s bodies this year, have raised fears of serial killings. One suspect, Helder Isidro, faces multiple murder charges after victims were found burned or abandoned in open fields.
Criminal law expert Cornelia van Graan stressed the need for urgent intervention by the Minister of Police and other authorities. She urged stronger crime prevention strategies and community involvement to protect vulnerable groups.
Local ANC leaders also condemned the killings. George Matjila, ANC Greater Tshwane secretary, described the murders as brutal and unacceptable, emphasizing the need for decisive action to safeguard residents, particularly women.
As Mamelodi residents reel from this tragedy, authorities face mounting pressure to restore safety and prevent further targeted attacks.
