SA Weather Service Warns Of Scorching Heat In Eastern KZN As Temperatures Soar Into The 30s
KwaZulu-Natal is heating up, literally. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a hot weather advisory for several parts of the province, warning residents to brace for sweltering temperatures and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Hot And Heavy Conditions Across The Coast And Inland
Tuesday’s heat is expected to hit hard across eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Hluhluwe, Richards Bay, Ulundi and surrounding areas. According to SAWS, Pietermaritzburg and Ulundi are expected to reach highs of around 34°C, while Durban will peak at 30°C. In coastal towns like KwaMbonambi and Richards Bay, temperatures are forecast to reach 33°C, creating uncomfortable and humid conditions.
Residents have been urged to stay hydrated, avoid excessive time outdoors, and seek out shaded or well-ventilated spaces. The warning also extends to schools, which are being encouraged to suspend outdoor physical activities to protect pupils from heat exhaustion.
A Reminder To Put Safety First
SAWS cautioned that extreme heat can quickly lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion, particularly among children and the elderly. Medical professionals have echoed this concern, warning caregivers to be extra vigilant.
Netcare, in a recent advisory, reminded the public that leaving anyone including pets inside a parked car can be deadly. “The temperature inside a vehicle parked in the hot sun can quickly become like a furnace,” the statement read.
A Tragic Lesson From Limpopo
Just last week, a heartbreaking incident in Limpopo underscored the dangers of extreme heat. Police opened a case of culpable homicide after a three-year-old girl was found dead inside a locked car at Seshego Hospital. Preliminary reports suggest she had been left there for several hours while temperatures soared.
Community Reactions And Calls For Awareness
On social media, Durban residents described the day’s heat as “unreal,” with many posting videos of melted ice creams, wilting plants, and fans working overtime. “It feels like the air is sitting on my skin,” one user wrote, while another joked that “Durban weather is trying to cook us alive.”
Local emergency services have also taken to online platforms to remind people to check on vulnerable neighbours and ensure that pets have access to water and shade.
Staying Cool And Cautious
As KZN faces another round of intense summer heat, experts recommend wearing light clothing, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping water bottles handy throughout the day. With temperatures climbing well above the comfort zone, the message is simple: stay hydrated, stay cool, and stay safe.
The heatwave may be temporary, but taking precautions can save lives and that’s worth more than a moment in the sun.
