Gauteng Education Denies Allegations of Matric Exam Corruption
Gauteng Education Pushes Back on Matric Exam Corruption Claims
As thousands of students in Gauteng sit for their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, the Gauteng Education Department (GDE) has strongly rejected claims that the integrity of matric examinations is at risk. The statements come after allegations surfaced about corruption in school security tenders meant to safeguard exam papers.
Allegations Spark Concern
A report cited information allegedly obtained by the Democratic Alliance (DA) from a whistleblower, claiming senior officials in the Gauteng Education Department engaged in systemic corruption when awarding security tenders. According to the report, certain companies were preselected to receive contracts in exchange for kickbacks reportedly ranging from 10% to 20%.
Social media quickly amplified the story, with many parents and students expressing concern online about whether the exams could be compromised.
GDE Calls Allegations Misleading
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona called the report “misleading and sensationalist,” emphasising that it irresponsibly questions the integrity of the NSC exams in the province.
“This article appears to rely solely on a DA statement and seems to be part of a broader political effort to portray Premier Lesufi negatively,” Mabona said. He assured the public that all examination storage and distribution points are secured according to strict national standards.
“No question papers or scripts have been reported as compromised. All exam papers are handled exclusively by GDE examination officialsnot external service providers,” Mabona added.
MEC Stresses Verification Before Sharing
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane urged the public and media to verify information before spreading claims that could undermine confidence in the examinations.
“It is unfortunate and irresponsible for unverified information to circulate during such a critical period for learners. The integrity of our NSC exams must be protected,” Chiloane said.
Safety Measures in Place
According to GDE, all security measures for the NSC exams are fully operational. Security personnel are monitoring storage and distribution points, and protocols are in place to prevent unauthorized access. Students, parents, and educators are encouraged to focus on the examinations rather than circulating unverified claims.
Public Reaction
While the department remains confident in the security of the exams, social media discussions reveal lingering concern among some parents and learners, reflecting broader anxieties about corruption in public institutions. GDE has reiterated that transparency and strict adherence to examination procedures remain a top priority during the matric season.
