A Miraculous Rescue: Cape Town Mother Found Alive in Car Boot After Hijacking Ordeal
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a Cape Town mother’s normal journey home turned into a nightmare that underscores the terrifying vulnerability of women in South Africa. After attending a bereavement gathering, the 34-year-old woman was driving through Gugulethu when her life was violently upended.
Three men attacked her car on NY5 Circle, first trying to smash her windscreen with a brick. When that failed, they swarmed the vehicle, overpowered her, and forced her into the boot of her own VW Polo. They then drove off with her trapped inside, a prisoner in her own car.
What followed was a period of unimaginable fear as she was driven to an unknown location. In a twist of fate that saved her life, her attackers eventually abandoned the car on Baden Powell Road between Strandfontein and Muizenberg. It was there that a team of vigilant law enforcement and police officers noticed the suspicious, stationary vehicle.
The Moment of Discovery
Thinking they might be investigating drug-related activity, the officers approached. They found a handbag on the seat and the keys still in the car, signaling that something was terribly wrong.
“When they opened the boot, they got such a fright, no one expected the woman to be inside,” a local crime fighter involved in the scene recounted. There she was, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, with a jacket thrown over her head, traumatized but alive.
She had been physically assaulted during the struggle, hit on her right arm and back, but was miraculously unharmed beyond that. The swift action of the officers had prevented a tragedy that has become all too common.
A Stark Reminder During 16 Days of Activism
The woman’s boyfriend, speaking on her behalf, expressed their immense gratitude. “She is not doing good at all, she is still crying and shaking,” he said, revealing this was not the first time she had been a victim of crime. “I just want to say to them ‘thank you for saving her life, she could have been among those we read about in the newspaper.’”
The rescue comes at a poignant time, as the country observes the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. Siya Monakali of the advocacy group Ilitha Labantu called the incident a “stark reminder of the state of violence that women face in our country.”
“While we are relieved that she survived this ordeal, she is one of the few fortunate cases,” Monakali stated. “For countless other women across South Africa, incidents such as these end in tragedy… Survivors should not have to rely on luck to escape harm, protection should be automatic and guaranteed.”
The suspects remain at large, and the police are investigating a case of hijacking and kidnapping. For one Cape Town mother, the nightmare is over, but her story is a chilling testament to the crisis that continues to unfold on South Africa’s streets every day.
